Ahithophel
Theme:
Bitterness
Business Application:
Beware of people who hold grudges and could undermine you
Who he was:
Ahithophel was one of David’s counselors, renown for his wisdom. His son Eliam was Bathsheba’s father and one of David’s mighty men. He advised Absalom during the insurrection. His name means “brother of foolishness.” After Hushai thwarted his advice to Absalom, he committed suicide.
Why his story matters:
Ahithophel’s actions indicate he became disillusioned with David after the king’s affair with his granddaughter. Had it not been for Hushai, he could have been the catalyst for the downfall of David’s kingdom.
What we can learn from him:
Ahithophel’s story illustrates the damage that people with a grudge can do. It is better to root out grievances and address them to prevent problems down the road.
Where we see his archetype today:
We see Ahithophel when people are full of bitterness, especially when they lose their reputation by acting out on their feelings.
How we can learn more about him:
We find Ahithophel in 2 Samuel 15:12, 31-34, 2 Samuel 16:23, and 2 Samuel 17:1-23.
